After the Fossano – Cuneo Team time trial won by the Trek-Segafredo team and which awarded the first Maglia Rosa of this edition to Ruth Winder, with the second stage of the Giro d’Italia Donne the climbs begin: today Saturday 3 July, at 12.10 pm the GPM – Grand Prix of the Mountains starts, the first of 5 stages that assign points valid for the Mountains Classification. The Maglia Verde/Effebiquattro Milano will go to the leader of this ranking.
Today’s 100.1 km route is based entirely in the province of Cuneo starting from Boves at an altitude of 600 m and that will take the cyclists to Prato Nevoso (CN), in the Ligurian Alps at an altitude of 1,607 m.
142 athletes will be at the starting line. Marlen Reusser (Alé Btc Ljubljana) and Giulia Marchesini (Aromitalia Basso Bikes Vaiano) will not ride.
The start begins with a series of ups and downs that take the athletes to the lowest point of the stage in Mondovì at an altitude of 420 m, where a climb of about 5 km begins up to Colle del Morte at an altitude of 720 m. However, it is at about km 80 that the real struggle actually begins: in about 20 km the competitors climb up to Prato Nevoso at an altitude of 1607 m with 12% slopes on arrival. The scheduled arrival time is at 3.05 pm.
